(dic. 1514, Bruselas–jun. 1564, Zante, República de Venecia).

Médico flamenco. Nacido en el seno de una familia de médicos, estudió medicina en la Universidad de París. Como profesor de cirugía, insistía en disecar personalmente los cadáveres, en lugar de delegar la tarea en ayudantes inexpertos, con el fin de aprender anatomía. La comparación de sus observaciones con los textos antiguos lo movió a objetar las teorías de Galeno, que hasta entonces todavía era considerado una autoridad. El texto completo de anatomía humana del mismo Vesalius, el trascendental De humani corporis fabrica libri septem [Siete libros sobre la estructura del cuerpo humano] (1543), denominado comúnmente la Fabrica, fue la más extensa y precisa de las descripciones del cuerpo humano publicadas hasta entonces.
